AU-EU Summit 17-18 February 2022: A Science Agenda

The AERAP Africa-Europe Science Collaboration Platform will organise side events at the AU-EU Summit on 14-18 February 2022. The purpose of the meeting will be to promote awareness of the contribution of collaborative research and development as a critical aspect of EU-Africa relations and collaborations, in particular in addressing global challenges together.

Mirjana Pović (1981, Serbia) is an assistant professor at the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI), an associate researcher at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain, and an honorary lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda. She obtained her PhD in astrophysics in 2010 from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (Spain). Her main research interests are related to active galaxies and galaxy formation and evolution. In addition, over more than 10 years, she worked on development in astronomy, science, and education in different parts of Africa through different projects and initiatives related to research collaborations, institutional development, students supervisions, training, lecturing, regulation development, women in science, and outreach. In addition, she is the founder of the African Network of Women in Astronomy (AfNWA) under the African Astronomical Society (AfAS). She received several international awards for her scientific achievements and contributions to society, including the inaugural Nature Research Award for Inspiring Science in 2018 and Jocelyn Bell Burnell Inspiration Medal in 2021. She believes that through education, science, and technology we can fight poverty in the long term and make in the future our world to be a better place for everyone, regardless of where the children are born.
